I remained still, voiceless, and my face censored by a René Magritte inspired balloon mask as Barber spoke and dropped bricks made of African soil at our feet. We were interested in exploding the struggle we have with our identities: his as a black American man and mine as a white American woman. We wanted to embody our personal battles and our momentum forward.
